BIM Game is a digital business game for construction planning disciplines. With this format Prof. Dr. Gregor Grunwald and Christian Heins from the Jade University of Applied Sciences teach the networked and digital planning method Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is to become the planning standard for construction projects in Germany and an integral part of university education.
In cooperation with the IHJO, the Department of Architecture at the Jade University implemented the new BIM Game teaching method for the second time. This time, the workshop was opened under the name Jade Work for the fields of architecture and civil engineering as well as for professional practice from the private sector and integrated as a further training offer into the 8th Oldenburg BIM Day, a specialist conference on digitization in the construction industry.
This is how the test simulation went
under realistic competitive conditions a campus workshop for the university should be planned. The participants were divided into groups. In each group, responsibilities were distributed and different roles were assigned to the players. The cooperation in the group was decentralized directly on the 3D model. The work took place in direct competition with the other groups and was controlled by regular construction meetings. Time was of the essence: interim submissions and knowledge of partial results from other groups increased the pressure on those involved. Results had to be delivered precisely and, above all, on time. This was ensured by a work portal that controlled the entire game, structured the process steps and queried the respective services. Time flew by, the conference rooms were open around the clock for discussions and meetings, and finally the “8. Oldenburger BIM Tag digital” to award three exciting designs.
The playful competitive atmosphere motivated everyone involved. She reduced reservations when dealing with new technologies, trained in digital communication and imparted knowledge about the benefits and performance of various digital planning tools. The intensity of the game blurred the lines between virtual and real communication and led to an intense group experience that is rare in this era.
