Student sports, sailing and local sports clubs
The student body of the Maritime Faculty offer an attractive range of sporting activities. Currently sailing, football, volleyball, dancing, Tae Bo, women’s fitness and “Kutterpullen” are offered. The latter is a type of rowing which is very popular in Elsfleth. Between March and December the various teams use two boats almost daily for training.
Since 2001 sailing in Elsfleth has been possible on the sailing dinghy “Calypso”. Demand was such that in the spring of 2011 two more RS-Vision dinghies were purchased. The dinghies lie in the grounds of the Weserstrand sailing club (SWE). The yacht harbour, which is independent of the tide, is used for training. Experienced sailors can also sail on the river Weser. Sailing is open to anyone who can show evidence of knowledge and skills in a small test.
In the town there are numerous clubs which accept students as members at reduced rates. Tennis, Handball, volleyball, riding, swimming and football are among the sports on offer. Additionally, the sporting activities offered by Oldenburg University are also open to Elsfleth students.
